A Minimalist’s Guide to Furniture for Less Clutter in the Home

All homes inevitably fill up with the detritus of furniture and gadgets, making your home look cluttered and even add to feeling of stress. Giving your home minimalist clean lines and clear surfaces makes for a calm, tranquil living space that you will really enjoy coming home to. Stripping back to the bare essentials can be achieved through clever use of multi-purpose furniture and hidden storage spaces. Adopting a “less is more approach” to interior design can also make small rooms appear more spacious.

Use Multipurpose Furniture

Using multipurpose furniture makes the most of the space available and is a simple way to avoid filling your house up with unnecessary items. You can find:

  • Side tables which also act as magazine racks.
  • Dining tables which open up work tables.
  • Nesting tables which can act as stools.
  • Kitchen taps which pour hot water.
  • Wall panels which can be pulled down and transformed into beds.

Conceal Gadgets

In this age of technology the proliferation of gadgets means that plenty of plug sockets and wires are now essential in any home. One particularly stylish feature to incorporate into your kitchen is the concealed plug socket-charging stations which pop up from a seemingly flawless granite top surface.

Limit Clutter by Using Disguised Storage Spaces

Carefully storing away wires, remotes, televisions, DVD players, and games consoles when they are not being used is a simple way to de-clutter. For a seemingly technology free zone once you’ve turned off the TV, invest in a storage cabinet which is in keeping with the decor of the room. Simply close the doors when you turn off everything so that it looks like any other cabinet.

Good Lighting

Any rooms which don’t have large windows or aren’t facing south will need to be lit well to appear larger and more inviting. One large central light will give off harsh, unflattering light so be sure to place lamps in nooks and crannies or anywhere that is left in shadow.

Use of mirrors

Placing a large mirror on a wall opposite a window is one of the simplest ways to achieve a lighter, much larger looking space. Unlike other large wall decorations that make rooms look smaller, there is no limit to how big your mirror should be.

Practical Home Improvement Uses of Vinegar

If you think vinegar is just for salads or cooking, think again. There are some practical ways to improve your household with vinegar.

Unclog Drains

Clear a clogged drain by pouring a ½ cup of baking soda into it, followed by 1 cup of vinegar. It will bubble and foam, and once it stops, flush the drain with hot water. 5 minutes later, you can rinse with water.

Insect Control

Fill a closed container with a cup of vinegar, add small slices of banana peel, and 1 cup of water, and then shake. Poke holes around the top for the insects to enter. It’s an earth-friendly insect trap you can put in the garden, the patio, or in the kitchen.

What Washes the Dishwasher?

Pour 1 cup of vinegar into the bottom of the tub and running it through a cycle without any dishes. Do this once a month to remove built-up soap residue.

Clean Your Shower Heads

Put boiling water in a bowl with a ½ cup of vinegar. Soak the shower head for 10 minutes. If your shower head can’t be removed, partly fill a plastic bag with full-strength vinegar and tape it over the fixture. Let it sit for an hour and remove.

Remove Rust

Renew rusty tools by soaking them in full strength vinegar for several days. Once the rust dissipates, rinse and dry well. This method also works well with screws and bolts.

Remove Smoke Odours

Tar and resin from cigarette smoke can stick to furniture and leave a very bad odour. To break through and eliminate the residue, spray vinegar on the hard surfaces, let it sit and then wipe it down with a dry cloth. You might need to repeat the process a few times if the residue is super smelly. Don’t spray on fabrics.

Cleaning Wood Floors

Wash your hardwood and pre-finished floors by using a ½ cup of vinegar to 1 gallon of hot water and either mop or scrub clean. Don’t soak the mop or cloth. Just wet it enough. Dry the floor completely with a floor mop afterwards. Standing water is the enemy of all floors. Don’t use this technique on waxed floors because it will strip off the wax finish. To lessen the smell of vinegar, add a drop or two of essential oil, lemon oil, or lavender scented oil as excellent options.

Clean Ceramic Tiles

Add a ½ cup of vinegar, a ½ cup of ammonia, and ¼ cup borax to a gallon of water. Scrub the tiles and then rinse thoroughly with water and allow to air dry.
